Robert Spencer
Chief Schools Officer
I became an educator because… I feel a calling to help the most marginalized communities see how a high quality education can positively impact their lives, life goals, families, their cultural communities and the local, state and global communities. In addition, I try to model living out the journey towards becoming the best version of myself by continuously learning and growing individually and collectively.
Prior to Equitas, I… I was a poor, only child from a single parent home in the projects of North Carolina.
Then, I became a first generation college graduate (Pre-med and English major), a Humanities Teacher thru Teach for America, an Army Preventive Medicine Sergeant, a Principal thru a New Leaders for New Schools Fellowship, a Founding Principal twice, a Principal Coach/Supervisor, and a Chief of Staff.
I chose Equitas because… I believe in servant leadership first and foremost, and I believe in Equitas's commitment to serving the Pico Union Community, which I love, respect and enjoy! I see Equitas as a major catalyst in Pico Union, one that leverages a high quality educational experience for students, families and staff that makes us all better humans and a stronger community. We will be a model school district that openly shares our successes and challenges in becoming a high performing network of schools.
Outside of school, I enjoy… spending time decompressing with my love, our family, our dog, and in between swimming, walking, riding my skateboard, motorcycle, and spending time at the beach!
